Glass is the primary material used in the manufacture of shower screens. The type of glass that is used will depend on the type of shower screen that you have installed. In Australia, there are strict laws around the characteristics and attributes of the glass that can be used in shower screens.

There are two type of glass used in the manufacture of glass shower screens –toughened safety glass and laminated safety glass. Each type of glass has unique properties that are matched to the type of shower screen.

Toughened safety glass is used in the manufacture of frameless and semi-frameless shower screens. The glass is toughened through a high temperature heating process then allowed to cool.  Toughened glass is unique in that should it ever break, it will shatter into hundreds of relatively harmless pieces therefore reducing the risk of injury.

As a standard, The Shower Man uses between 6mm and10mm toughened glass in their frameless and semi-frameless shower screens. Toughened glass also has the ability to be “coloured” to suit your design needs.

Laminated safety glass is used in the manufacture of fully framed shower screens. This type of glass has a PVC film sandwiched between the glass to prevent breakage into large sharp pieces. Laminated glass cannot be used without a frame around it and has greater acoustic properties.

As a standard, The Shower Man uses 6mm laminated in their fully framed shower screens.

If you currently have an older style shower screen installed in your bathroom the glass might not be considered safe.

It is recommended that you contact The Shower Man to get a free quote on replacing your shower screen.
